What does the cell constant mean, e.g. ZK0.5, ZK1...?

Conductivity probes consist of a pair of electrodes. The cell constant K is an essential property of the probe and reflects the relation of electrode distance to electrode areas. Because the conductivity between the electrodes is affected by the cell geometry, the area and spacing must be defined as ZK. For a traditional cell with two platinum electrodes of 1 cm² area at a distance of 1 cm, the cell constant is K = 1.0 cm-1

C = conductivity in Siemens per cm (S/cm)
R = electrical resistance in ohms
G = conductance in Siemens (S; 1 S = 1 Ohm-1)
L = electrode spacing (cm)
A = electrode area (cm²)
K = cell constant ( cm-1); K = L/A

For weakly conducting samples, the electrodes are moved closer together while reducing L to obtain smaller cell constants of ZK 0.1 and ZK 0.01 cm-1. This measure increases the conductivity between the electrodes and thus simplifies the electronic evaluation by the measuring instrument. Conversely, increase L for strongly conducting solutions
